About Me

I’m Daisy Savage, a British Japanese-English translator.

I’ve worked on more than 100 productions for theatrical release, Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Prime Video and more.

I set up SAVAGE T訳ANSLATION to work directly with directors and producers, and to take a more hands-on role in shaping how their stories reach English-speaking audiences.

Kawase Hasui, Ikegami Honmonji Temple, 1931

My love of Japan began with woodblock prints, especially the work of Kawase Hasui. After a degree in art history, I went on to a master’s in Japanese, where I studied translation, including literary translation, and majored in Japanese music and film. I still watch every scene with an art historian’s eye: what’s on screen, what’s left unsaid, and how image and dialogue work together.

For my first paid translation job, I subtitled The Mysterians, a 1950s Toho sci-fi film. The audio was poor and there was no script, so even native Japanese-speaking translators had turned it down. I ditched my weekend plans, worked through it line by line, and delivered it on time. I fell in love with subtitle translation and haven’t looked back.

I’ve travelled the length of Japan and lived in Tokyo on a cultural activities visa, studying taiko.

Got a film, series or book that needs a natural English voice? I’d love to hear about it.
